Why do you sometimes get a stitch when you go for a run and how can you stop it?

Answer:
Mainly because you haven't warmed up properly, although the calcium thing is true as well, as is correct hydration and not running on a full stomach.Best thing is to do some stretches and start off at a gentle jog. The second half of your run is when to put the real effort in, followed by a gentle 10 minute jog at the end to warm down and help shift lactic acid build up.
To avoid getting the stitch, you should do proper warm ups before running. Do simple stretches first instead of breaking into a run straightaway. If you already have it, then you can stop running for a while; probably just walk until the stitch goes away
could be 'water log' which goes away with time, or maybe an 'air pocket' which goes away with time. try walking and concentrating on your breathing
I'm assumming when you sat "stitch" you mean a side cramp, right? You're not getting enough oxygen, but if you run through it your body compsensates and adjust. Try to take deeper breaths and hold it in a little longer (Difficult I know).
walk
the stitch can be stoped by not eating sweats and more fruits
It is your breathing technique, you need to inhale and exhale properly while running.
My son ran cross country throughout high school, and he initially had problems with side stitch. We were told to up his calcium intake. (Sounds wierd I know.) I got him some calcium chews so I knew it would get into his system, and it did the trick beautifully! He didn't suffer even once after taking the supplement.
getting stitch is something to do with the liver inflating slightly due to excessive friction between it and the rib cage. If you train regualrly the muscles is stronger and it doesn't happen so soon. If it is already happening the only thing you can really do is apply pressure to the area to restrict blood flow.
Don't go running on a full tummy.
not sure why we get it but it damn well hurts! i find that crouching down for a minute or so helps.
The stitch is a cramp in the diaphragm. This is the muscle that inflates the lungs. I've heard the liver pulling down as you run is one of the causes. What you do to alleviate it when running is to form your hand into the Boy Scout's salute and jam your fingers under your rib cage into the offending area. Also slow up a tad on the running pace until it lets go.
I would do warms ups before you start to run... Stretches are a good idea as it helps to warm your muscles etc..But if encounter a stitch whilst running " i use to stretch up and put my arm behind my shoulder , Touch youe shoulder blade with palm of hand" sometimes it can be painful but do it gently. I would adviese a good routine before and after a running session .. good luck!
